FIFTEEN adventurous students from Rudheath Senior Academy have returned from an unforgettable skiing trip in the French Alps. The group, comprising students from Years 8 to 11, spent an action-packed week at the UCPA Altair Outdoor Centre in Flaine, France from January 5 to 10.
Despite an eight-hour delay at Liverpool Airport caused by adverse weather in the UK, the students’ enthusiasm remained high as they embarked on their journey to the Alps. The UCPA Altair Centre proved to be an ideal base for their trip, offering ski-in, ski-out facilities and warm lunches that recharged the group between morning and afternoon lessons.
Under the guidance of experienced instructors, all students—many of whom were complete beginners at the start—progressed remarkably. By the end of the week, they were confidently skiing blue runs, with some even tackling the more challenging red slopes, undeterred by the rainy and misty weather conditions.
Head of Year 10, Phill Brown who was one of the trip leaders commented: “This trip was not only about learning to ski but also about building resilience, teamwork, and an appreciation for the natural world. The students demonstrated incredible determination and adaptability, and it was inspiring to see their confidence grow throughout the week.”
Beyond skiing, the trip provided invaluable educational experiences. The UCPA staff hosted talks on the mountain environment, educating students about local plant and animal life. A highlight of the trip was a hands-on lesson in avalanche risk management, culminating in a search-and-rescue activity that brought real-world application to their learning.
Steve Docking OBE, CEO of North West Academies Trust (NWAT) who runs the school, commented: “At North West Academies Trust, we believe in providing opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom.
“This skiing trip is a perfect example of how our schools, like Rudheath Senior Academy, inspire students to grow in confidence, resilience, and teamwork while experiencing the world in new and exciting ways. I’m incredibly proud of the students and staff for embracing this adventure and making the most of the challenges and opportunities it presented.”
Rudheath Senior Academy is committed to providing enriching experiences beyond the classroom, and this trip to Flaine is a shining example of that mission. The academy would like to extend its gratitude to the staff at the UCPA Altair Outdoor Centre for their exceptional support and hospitality.
